Transmission flush
Does your transmission fluid need to be changed?
A transmission flush is a process where professional machinery is used to remove all the old fluid in your transmission via pressure. Your mechanic may also run a cleaning solution through the transmission before adding new fluid.
This service is done to keep your engine clean and in good working order by removing buildup, debris, and other kinds of sludge that can affect the function of your engine.
Keep in mind, this is slightly different from a transmission fluid change. During this process, only part of the fluid is removed (drained via gravity), so the transmission cannot be fully cleaned as it would be with a transmission flush.=

WHEN IS A TRANSMISSION FLUSH NECESSARY?
Despite common myths to the contrary, a flush can positively impact the overall performance and longevity of your vehicle. Your vehicle user manual should have the most accurate guidelines on if or when this service should be performed. In the meantime, here are some signs that you might need this service:
- Dark brown or red fluid on the dipstick. This is usually a sign that foreign particles or debris have made their way into your transmission.
- Slipping transmission. You’ll notice a delay between your engine engaging and the actual gear shifting. This is a sign that your transmission is no longer working properly.
- A change in the sound or feel of your transmission as it shifts gears. This is why it’s so important for you to “get to know your car” and what its normal performance sounds and feels like.
The reason for some of the myths surrounding this service is because more inexperienced service providers may use equipment that applies too much pressure to the interior of the transmission while attempting to clean it—causing buildup to be lodged in other areas of the engine and potentially damaging seals and gaskets.
It’s also important not to get a change or flush if there are other signs of a problem with your engine, as these services can potentially make the issue worse. This is another reason that many people get the impression that flushes or changes can be bad for your vehicle.
HOW MUCH WILL A TRANSMISSION FLUSH COST?
The cost of this service varies depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the service provider you choose. It is also slightly more expensive than a transmission fluid change, which requires less fluid:
- A transmission fluid change can cost between $80 and $150.
- A transmission flush can cost between $125 and $250.
For a flush, your service provider will give you the option to get the pan removed during cleaning—and to replace the filter. While these services will add to the price, we highly recommend them, since they will help to further extend the life of your transmission and allow the technician to inspect the overall health of your transmission.
THE BENEFITS OF A TRANSMISSION FLUSH
REDUCED EXPENSE – When done properly, transmission flushes can not only improve the performance of your transmission, they can prevent other engine problems related to built-up slime, sludge, and other types of buildup moving out into the rest of your engine. In turn, this can prevent a large number of preventable repairs from burning a hole in your wallet.
INCREASED LONGEVITY – Probably the most influential benefit of transmission flushes is the positive effect it has on the lifespan of your vehicle. Since transmission problems are one of the most expensive reasons people send their vehicles out to pasture, you can actually keep your favorite vehicle for longer just by keeping your transmission clean and lubricated.
IMPROVED SAFETY -Transmission issues can cause breakdowns, performance issues, and other expensive (and potentially dangerous) issues with your vehicle. To keep yourself, your passengers, and your fellow drivers safe, we recommend performing regular maintenance and inspections on your vehicle.
