Your vehicle’s radiator is an integral part of the engine’s cooling system. But that’s not all it does. Despite the name, the cooling system does more than keeping your engine cool. It also prevents corrosion in vital engine components and contains anti-freeze to prevent your engine from freezing in the winter. The radiator holds and cools the engine’s coolant, preventing dangerous overheating. The coolant also provides heat for your vehicle’s heater.

If you have a leaking radiator, your engine (and your comfort) could be at risk. Leaking coolant could cause the engine to overheat, or prevent coolant from getting to the heater, leaving you and your passengers in the cold.

Radiator problems can be caused by many things such as age, corrosion, or even road debris damaging the cooling system. If you notice one or more of the following symptoms, it’s time to bring your car or truck in for a radiator service.

What else gets checked when my radiator is serviced?

The radiator must always work properly to prevent your vehicle from overheating. To ensure that your radiator works perfectly, our technicians will look at several different things including: 

• Radiator Fan
  The fan behind the radiator cools the antifreeze mixture as it enters the radiator. If the radiator fan isn’t working properly, the car can overheat when parked or in traffic.
• Radiator Blockages
  Road debris such as dirt, grime, and litter can get stuck in the radiator, blocking the airflow and causing poor radiator performance. Our technicians will check for obstructions and remove them ensuring your radiator gets the airflow it needs.
• Radiator Hoses
  The hoses which connect the radiator to the engine can sometimes become old and crack with age, causing leaks.
• Rust and Corrosion
  Although modern radiators are built to be rust-resistant, they can still get corroded. If the coolant is not properly mixed with water or is too old, it can begin to cause corrosion in the radiator and cause leaks. Some radiators also have plastic parts that can age due to the heat of the engine and crack, causing leaks. Sometimes these leaks can be repaired. Other times, the only solution is a radiator replacement.

How often do radiators need to be replaced?

Radiator replacement intervals depend on the type of vehicle and driving conditions. Typically, a radiator will need replacement at approximately 80,000 miles or 10 years of age. Radiators don’t age like brake pads or engine belts, but the repeated heating and cooling cycles of the radiator will eventually cause cracks and leaks in the plastic parts of the radiator.

If a radiator hasn’t been well maintained, old coolant can cause corrosion or sludge and result in pre-mature radiator failure.
