• Jack up the car – Your tech will raise the car up so that they can see underneath. 
• Find the leak – They’ll look around for signs of leaks or damage in and around your gas tank.
• Prep the area – Once they find the leak, they’ll need to sand down and clean the area around the hole so they can apply repair materials.
• Apply patch – Most often, the tech will apply a welded patch or one made of shaped epoxy to the leaking area. Once this hardens, they can fill the tank with gas and check to see if the leak is fixed.

IS YOUR GAS TANK LEAKING?

Leaking fuel can be very dangerous, so it’s important to know the signs of a problem. Here are some common red flags.

• Fuel Smells –  If you can smell gas in or around your car, that’s a big sign that there may be a leak—or damage to your exhaust system. You might smell it for a minute or so when you first start your car, but you should not smell it afterward.
• On ‘E’ Faster – When you fuel up, pay attention to how long it usually takes before you need to get more gas. If this starts happening faster than usual, it might mean that you have a leak. You can also look at your gauge when you park. If it’s lower when you start your car back up again, this is another sign of a problem.
• Puddles –  This one is more obvious. If you see a dark spot or puddle beneath your vehicle in the same area as your gas tank, that’s usually a leak. If you park on the grass, you may not see actual liquid, but the grass around your fuel tank will be dead.

If you notice one of these problems, get to a shop. You’ll want to get the leak repaired as soon as possible, for your own safety.

WHAT ABOUT FROZEN FUEL LINES?

Yes, fuel lines are another place where gas can leak. Usually, this happens when they get damaged by flying rocks or other debris from the road. It can also happen in cold weather. In this case, water freezes in or around fuel lines, damaging them and causing them to leak
