How important is a fuel pump?

You jump in the car to go to work. As you turn the key you hear the engine trying to start. There’s a lot of chattering going on, but the car just doesn’t seem to want to engage. You know the starter is good, and you’ve had a new battery replaced, but the car just won’t start. If this happens to you, chances are, you need a fuel pump.  

The fuel pump delivers fuel to each of the fuel injectors in a car or truck’s engine. The fuel pump is in the vehicle’s gas tank and uses an electric motor to pump the fuel. The pressure and output of the pump are controlled by a regulator that ensures the injectors get the right amount of fuel. If one of the components of the fuel pump goes bad, you’ll notice decreased performance or even difficulty starting.

Common signs you need a fuel pump replacement

High-quality OEM fuel pumps often last the life of the vehicle. However, like any mechanical component, they can eventually wear out.

When they do, you’ll start to notice some of the following symptoms:

• Vehicle won’t start, has difficulty starting, or stalls unexpectedly: An engine that has poor fuel supply will struggle to run properly.
• Check engine light is on: Sometimes a fuel pump doesn’t stop working right away. It takes time to fail, and while it does, the fuel pressure and volume of fuel it delivers will decrease. This can cause an imbalance in the fuel-air ratio, causing the check engine light to turn on.
• Whirring noise from fuel tank: As the electric motor in the fuel pump wears out, sometimes it can make a whirring noise as it struggles to provide enough fuel to the injectors. When you hear this noise, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle in for a fuel pump repair.

What goes into a fuel pump repair and replacement?

• The fuel pump is tested to be sure it doesn’t work.
• The defective fuel pump is removed from the tank. If there’s no access port for the pump, the tank must be removed first.
• Fuel hoses and electrical connectors are removed.
• Once the pump is out, any reusable components are removed and attached to the new pump.
• Many vehicles have an external fuel filter. The technician will take advantage of everything being accessible to replace this filter too.
• Fuel is put back in the tank and the system is tested for leaks.

While fuel pumps might last a long time, there are a couple of things owners can do to maximize the life of their vehicle’s fuel pump.

• Change your fuel filter regularly: The fuel filter is responsible for preventing contaminants such as rust and dirt from getting into the engine. As the filter fills up with contaminants, the fuel pump has to work harder to deliver the optimum amount of fuel, and eventually, the pump will wear itself out.
• Don’t run out of gas: It seems obvious enough, but running out of gas is far worse than the embarrassment of being stuck somewhere. The fuel in your tank also cools the fuel pump. The more frequently you let the tank fall almost empty, the more often the fuel pump will overheat itself. Frequently running hot will cause the fuel pump to wear out more quickly.
