You’re getting ready to pull into traffic. You shift into gear, let off the clutch, and hit the gas pedal. You hear the engine rev up, you smell burning, but you don’t seem to be going anywhere. Don’t panic! It sounds and smells like you need some clutch maintenance.
The clutch disengages the transmission from the drive train. The engine of your vehicle needs to be constantly spinning while on. If it stops spinning, then it won’t run. Your transmission transmits the spinning motion to the drive shafts, then delivers that power to the wheels. But you don’t always want your wheels and your transmission to be spinning. The clutch makes it possible for the transmission and engine to disengage when at a stop, or when changing gears.

Common signs it’s time for a clutch replacement
Clutches wear out over time, as they wear out, the clutch can slip. Slipping is an issue where the clutch disc which joins to the flywheel doesn’t catch as well as it should. This means that your vehicle won’t get full power to your wheels in the way it would when the clutch isn’t slipping. You’ll notice a lot of noise, but not a lot of performance.

- Squealing noises when the clutch is pressed
- Horrible grinding noises
- Burning smells
- Or the vehicle struggling to get into gear
Common clutch problems
- A slipping clutch is usually accompanied by a burning smell. But don’t be alarmed. If you catch it early, a mechanic can replace the clutch, and make all these problems go away.
- Horrible grinding noises when the clutch is pressed is usually a surefire sign that the throw-out bearing has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
- Worn out clutch pressure plates can cause chattering when accelerating or make it difficult to shift gears. This is another wear item that can be easily replaced by your mechanic while they are performing a clutch replacement.
- A loose or spongy clutch or an excessively firm pedal can be the result of old or contaminated hydraulic fluid or leaking clutch hydraulic lines. By flushing out the old fluid and replacing hydraulic hoses, mechanics can make the clutch pedal feel right again.
- On vehicles with cable-operated clutches, the cable can eventually stretch. By re-tightening and lubricating the cable, mechanics can ensure that the clutch operates the way it should.
