STEERING SERVICE

What’s so important about a vehicle’s steering system?

Notice that your vehicle is starting to drift to a certain side while you’re driving or the drive seems a lot bumpier than usual? Maybe you feel a shuddering in the wheel as you drive, or you hear a groaning sound coming from the engine bay when you turn. You’re not the only one to ever experience this. This is a common problem with all makes and models of cars and trucks. What you’re noticing is the steering system of your vehicle might need repairs. Age, road conditions, and driving habits can all slowly wear down a vehicle’s steering system.

Car and truck steering repair

There are several main components to the steering system all working together to make sure your vehicle goes in the direction it's supposed to. The power steering, the steering column, and the rack and pinion all impact how your car handles on the road. Fixing a vehicle’s steering system can be a complicated messy job, but rest assured, no matter what you drive, our technicians know how to bring that new car steering feeling back to your vehicle.

Common signs your steering system needs a mechanic

The steering system is one of the critical safety elements of your vehicle. If one or more of the parts of the steering system needs repair, your vehicle could become unsafe to drive. If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it’s time to consult a mechanic.

Here are some of the signs that you might need to contact us:

  • If you notice fluid stains on the ground under the engine, tighter steering than usual, clunking noises while turning the wheel, strange tire wear, or loose-feeling steering, these are all signs that you may need rack and pinion or steering column repair.

  • Abnormal tire wear, clunking, or a loose steering feeling can also result from worn tie rods in the rack and pinion.

  • A groaning noise when turning the steering wheel can indicate a problem with your vehicle’s power steering pump.

  • Leaks can also be a sign that power steering hoses in the engine bay need replacing. Catching leaks early while they are minor can save you a lot of headaches later.

Common steering malfunctions

Several things can go wrong which affect your steering.  But no matter the problem, our trained technicians know how to fix your vehicle.

  • If your vehicle makes a groaning noise while turning, a mechanic can perform a power steering service, replacing the old fluid and ensuring the power steering belts are adjusted properly (if applicable). Dirt and debris can build up in the power steering system, making it harder to turn the steering wheel, eventually resulting in damage to the steering column.

  • Worn tie rods or steering columns can be replaced to improve loose steering.

  • Leaking hoses can be replaced, preventing further damage to the rack and pinion or power steering pump.

  • A steering wheel that is hard to turn can be due to issues with the power steering pump or the steering column.

THE BENEFITS OF OUR STEERING REPAIR SERVICE

Increased Safety

Steering failure can cause dangerous driving situations, and if you wait until something breaks completely, you may not be able to properly control your vehicle.

Save Money

Excessive pulling to one side can reduce fuel economy and prematurely wear out tires. By getting your steering repaired, you can prolong the life of your tires, and save on fuel costs.

More comfort

A vehicle with shuddering wheels or a tendency to wander all over the road is harder to drive and less comfortable to be a passenger. By bringing your vehicle in for power steering repair, you can restore a comfortable ride for you and your passengers.

ALL TYPES OF STEERING REPAIRS

Sometimes steering issues aren’t just caused by racks or steering columns. Sometimes damaged suspension components can also impact your steering. When you bring in your vehicle, an experienced mechanic will look at these other parts of your vehicle and recommend or perform repairs as needed. This is why TLC auto offers a full range of suspension repair services.
